This method determines the amount of halogen acid gas other than HF evolved during combustion of compounds based on Halogenated polymers and compounds containing halogenated additives from cable insulation and outer sheath.
For certain locations , the amount of halogen acid gas evolved during burning of cables will have corrosive gas capable of causing in an environment.
Cable compound is heated up to max 800 degreeC and is decompose completely. Halogen gas evolved is absorbed in suitable solvent , which is used to calculate HCL in mg/litre
In IEC method HCL is calculated by titrimetric or by use of Conductivity meter.
In titrimetric method , material under test is heated in a stream of dry air and the gases are absorbed in Sodium Hydroxide solution contained in wash bottles. The amount of halogen acid the be determined by acidifying the solution with Nitric acid
Adding a measured volume of AgNo3 solution and back titrating the excess ammonium thiocyanate , using Ferric Ammonium sulphate as the indicator
The assembly of the components which constitute the test apparatus should be leak tight. The connecting distances between the quartz glass tube and the first bottle and between subsequent bottles should be as short as possible.Silicon rubber tubing should be used for these connection.
In instrumental method conductivity of the absorbed solvent is measured and on that basis halogen is calculated
